In the report, Tractica divides biometrics use cases into two separate threads: consumer-facing use cases, which are typically high-volume at a low price, and enterprise-facing use cases (including government and defense), which are normally much smaller volumes but use more expensive devices.
Tractica forecasts that the global biometrics market will increase from $2.0 billion in 2015 to $14.9 billion by 2024, which amounts to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.3% and cumulative revenue for the 10-year period totaling $67.8 billion.
“The biometrics market is finally here to stay,” said Tractica principal analyst Bob Lockhart. “After a long wait, use cases that were once a gleam in the eye are reality. Biometric voter registration removes barriers of poverty and illiteracy, and it can run on a tablet. Consumers can authenticate financial transactions with a fingerprint, voice, eyes, or even an electrocardiogram, all with far lower risk than passwords that can be stolen and used on the other side of the world.”
The report finds that key industries in the biometrics market over the next decade are likely to be finance, consumer devices, healthcare, and government, followed by enterprise applications, defense, education, law enforcement, and non-government organizations.
The use cases that are likely to drive biometrics revenue over the next decade include consumer device authentication, mobile banking, automated teller machines, government IT systems, point-of-sale transactions, pharmacy dispensing, and wearable device authentication.

The biometrics market will see a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.3 percent and cumulative revenue of $67.8 billion for the ten-year period, according to the firm.
Tractica said the top industries that will use biometric technology over the next ten years include finance, consumer devices, healthcare, and government followed by enterprise applications, defense, education, law enforcement, and non-government organizations.

Last month, Tractica reported that the number of people using home health technologies will increase from 14.3 million worldwide in 2014 to 78.5 million by 2020. In Tractica’s view, home health technologies include offerings that allow providers to remotely monitor patients with chronic conditions, use technology to improve care for elderly people, and conduct virtual visits with a physician. Tractica added that within the home health technology space, medical monitoring, diagnosis, and treatment will be the largest markets between 2014 and 2020.

Visa gets serious about biometrics -



Visa is looking for industry partners to explore how biometrics such as fingerprints could be used to authenticate and streamline a raft of different payments.

George Lawson, Visa Australia and New Zealand’s head of emerging products and innovation, spoke at the CeBIT conference yesterday saying that the actual process of payments would gradually "slip to the background" as biometrics, authorised internet connected devices and contactless payment systems stripped friction out of the process.

Lawson said that 60 per cent of card transactions were now contactless, running at a rate of 70 million a month - meaning Australia had the highest adoption rate of contactless payments in the world.

Biometrics could further reduce payments friction, as long as consumers were comfortable with the notion, Lawson said.

"We are looking to work with industry on the issue. If I use a biometric how can I re-use that in another instance on the device?" he asked.

The user experience would be improved as there would be no need to re-authenticate the payer each time, but Lawson acknowledged that the biometric data and authentication processes would have to be managed by a trusted party in the payments equation.

He didn’t say whether Visa was willing to take on such a role.

It is however taking on the role of token generation to help secure a range of online payments. Tokenisation involves taking a 16-digit card number that generates a digital account number or "token" used to authorise digital payments.

If the token is compromised, the card does not need to be replaced – only the token. And because tokens are unique to a particular device, it’s not possible to take a token from, for example, a mobile phone and use it on another device. 

Lawson said that tokens would also underpin payments made in the future using wearable technology or internet connected devices, such as smartwatches, cars or refrigerators. 

"These are capabilities that are coming in the not too distant future," Lawson said.

Tokenisation is also one of the keys to Apple Pay, which has been released in the US, but has yet to launch locally. Visa launched its tokenisation service in the US last year and has pledged to roll it out here, but Lawson yesterday declined to comment on when that might take place.

Rival MasterCard already has its local tokenisation service up and running in Australia.

Biometrics show promise, but only as part of an authentication solution which optimises security, privacy and convenience. Biometrics let you authenticate without noticing you’re doing so, but this strength can also be their weakness. Your biometrics are continually exposed: your fingerprint to everything you touch or your face to every camera; and your biometrics can’t be changed (whether they’ve been compromised or for privacy). You can have a different password for each service and change them when compromised, giving control of who you authenticate to. We need to ensure that authentication solutions accept only biometrics shown by a real person (not recorded ones), that individuals can choose who they authenticate to and for what, and that everyone’s privacy is protected.
