An IP Camera or a Network Camera can be described as a camera and computer combined in one unit. It captures and transmits live images directly over an IP network, enabling authorized users to locally or remotely view, store, and manage video over standard IP-based network infrastructure.

IP Camera is a standalone system connecting directly to an Ethernet or a High Speed Internet connection (such as DSL). ‘IP’ stands for Internet Protocol, which is a protocol for transmitting data across a network. An IP Camera plugs directly into your network router, and is not reliant on a computer to work. Data from the IP Camera is transmitted through the network, and can be securely viewed at a remote location.

A network camera has its own IP address. It is connected to the network and has a built-in web server, FTP server, FTP client, e-mail client, alarm management, programmability, and much more options. A network camera does not need to be connected to a computer; it operates independently and can be placed wherever there is an IP network connection.

There are two kinds of IP Cameras:

• Centralized IP Cameras, which require a central Network Video Recorder (NVR) to handle the recording, video and alarm management.
• Decentralized IP Cameras, which do not require a central Network Video Recorder (NVR), as the cameras have recording function built-in and can thus record directly to local storage media, such as flash drives and hard disk drives or to standard network attached storage.
